Frequently Asked Questions

General

Do you have a minimum or maximum order size?

No. We understand that every business needs printed books for various purposes and that every project is unique. Our services are personalised and designed to save you time, reduce complexity, and make printing feel refreshingly straightforward.

Can I receive a proof before approving my print project?

Absolutely. Every order gets at least a PDF proof for your review and approval before we go to print. If you'd like to see and feel a physical proof, we can arrange that too, though there may be an additional fee depending on your print run quantity.

What payment methods do you accept?

All payments are processed through invoices with a 30-day payment period, giving you flexibility to manage your cash flow while we get your books printed.

Do you provide shipping or delivery services?

We ship print orders nationwide for delivery express or via courier. Your account manager can arrange the most convenient option for your project. Please note that our express delivery partner cannot deliver to PO Boxes, Mail Service points and some remote locations, therefore orders to these destinations use Australia Post.

What happens if I'm not happy with my printed books?

We're committed to getting it right. If there's an issue with print quality or our work doesn't meet the agreed specifications, we'll work with you to fix it.

Can I mix and match binding or finishes within a single order?

Yes, you can also order multiple different book print runs within a single order. Why order one book variant at a time, when they can all go to print and you can receive them all together? Let us know during your print consultation with us and we’ll make it work.

How can I get a quote? Are all quotes free?

You sure can! Fill out our quick online form to request a free quote. The more details you share, the faster we can price things up accurately and start working with you to get it in print.

Do you offer rush printing services?

With our continuous production schedule, we can often accommodate tight deadlines. Get in touch with your specific timeline and we'll let you know what's possible.

We're based in Melbourne, so can we pick up our print run order?

Yes, pickup is available and can be organised with your account manager. We'll coordinate a convenient time for you to collect your order from our facility.

Can you help with book distribution or fulfilment?

While we currently only focus on producing outstanding books, we can point you toward reliable distribution partners from our network that have distributed books we have printed to help you with this and fulfilment.

Printing

What file formats do you need for printing?

We work with PDFs that are print-ready, but don't worry if yours isn't quite there yet. We’ve got a handy resource available to help you get started on the print-ready basics, and we provide a pre-press support service to help you get your files sorted for a beautiful print finish.

Can you help make my book look professional?

Through our prepress support service, we can help match you with a designer that fits your needs. After years in the printing business, we’ve developed a network of reputable, reliable local designers based in Australia that can handle everything from interior layouts to cover design, making sure your book looks as good as it reads.

Do you provide ISBN and barcode services?

We don't handle ISBN registration or barcode generation, but we can point you in the right direction and make sure your book is formatted properly once you've got those sorted.

Are your papers and inks eco-friendly?

We take pride in printing with purpose, to ensure that our work doesn’t have a negative impact on the environment. We have a range of FSC-certified, PEFC-certified and 100% recycled papers to choose from, which you can view here or contact us to request a sample book to decide which ones are best for you.

Our printers also use environmentally responsible inks that are low waste and emit no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which contribute to lower carbon emissions. Learn more about our impact & commitments to environmentally friendly printing here.

Can you print books with unusual sizes or dimensions?

Yes, we can handle custom book sizes beyond standard dimensions. We'll discuss the best approach during your consultation to ensure your unique vision comes to life. If you're still figuring which size is best for your project, check out our print-ready guide here for sizing information.

How long will my books take to print?

Although our printing team is quite speedy, turnaround time depends on many factors unique to every project. Some print runs can be done in a day, while some could take a couple of weeks before dispatch. To ensure we consistently print high-quality products, we provide you with an accurate and realistic schedule upfront, and keep you informed throughout the entire process.

What binding options are available for digitally printed books?

We offer various binding styles, including perfect binding, saddle stitching, coil binding, and hardcover options to suit different book types and budgets. Browse all available styles here or request a phone call by enquiring with us online to discuss your project.

What paper stocks and finishes can I choose from?

We stock a range of paper weights and finishes, from standard book paper to premium options, which you can browse here. During a personalised consultation, we’ll also be able to recommend the best choice based on your project requirements and what you’re hoping to achieve.

Do you have samples of different papers I can receive?

Yes, we have a paper stock sampler book that includes all our paper stock options in one handy booklet so you can see and feel the difference before making your choice. Get in touch to request a paper sampler book.

Binding

How do I know which binding is right for my book?

It depends on many factors, such as the page count, how it'll be used, and your budget. With our print experts, you can discuss your project and get tailored recommendations to make sure your books hit the mark.

Can you bind different paper types in the same book?

Absolutely. We can work with mixed paper stocks, including pages that have different sizes, book sections with flaps, pockets and more. When working with Foliofox, your assigned account manager is there to plan the production of your project to ensure that the binding method aligns to the fit and purpose of your books accordingly.

Do you offer custom cover materials for hardcover books?

Absolutely. Part of our expertise in book printing and binding is our capability to work with your custom commercial book projects, and that includes the ability to customise your hardcover books with various materials.

What's the difference between perfect binding and case binding?

Perfect binding creates paperback books, also known as softcover books, by glueing the pages together at the spine, while case binding produces hardcover (or hardback) books with sewn pages and a hard cover. Case binding is more durable as it’s made to last multiple lifetimes and offers a premium look and finish, while perfect binding is more versatile, flexible, cost-effective and portable.

How many pages can each binding method handle?

The right binding method depends on your project's page count. Saddle stitching is the most restricted; depending on the thickness of your chosen paper stock, it typically binds between 8 and 64 pages. The page count must also be a multiple of 4, as the pages are printed as spreads and folded in half to make four pages. Perfect binding and case binding, in contrast, can accommodate much thicker books. Part of our process involves a personalised consultation so we can advise you on the best approach for your page count, project goals, and requirements.

Can you repair or rebind existing books?

Unfortunately, we specialise in binding new books, but we’re happy to chat and provide some suggestions for alternative book binders that offer repair services.

Finishing & Embellishments

Which finishing option is most cost-effective?

Basic lamination is usually the most budget-friendly option while still providing excellent protection and a professional appearance.

How do finishing options affect turnaround time?

Some finishes may only add a day or two to production, while others may extend the turnaround time further, depending on the complexity and quantity of your print run. Finishing and embellishments are always factored into a project’s timeline and can be discussed in-depth with your dedicated account manager as part of our process.

Can finishing options be applied to inside pages?

While most finishing techniques are designed for covers, our experienced custom book printing services mean the possibilities are almost endless, including special interior pages with finishes.

Can you combine different finishing techniques?

Definitely. Many of our best-looking books use multiple techniques, like matte lamination with spot UV or embossing with foil stamping.

Do you have samples of different finishes I can see?

Yes, we keep samples of all our finishing options so you can see and feel the difference before making your choice. Get in touch to request a sample pack of our available finishes and embellishments.

What's the difference between lamination and UV coating?

Lamination uses a plastic film applied with heat, while UV coating is a liquid applied and cured with UV light. Both protect your cover but provide a unique look and feel.

Prepress Support

What file formats do you work with for prepress?

We primarily work with PDFs, but can also accept InDesign files, Word documents, and other common formats. All files need to be converted to print-ready PDFs before going to print. We suggest following our print-ready blueprint to meet all our recommended specifications.

Can you fix files that were designed by someone else?

Usually, yes. For making sure your file is print-ready, we can troubleshoot and fix most common issues, although complex fixes including design changes will require the original or a matched designer.

How much does prepress support cost?

We pride ourselves on being not just any printer, but your partner in print, therefore all our prepress support services are complimentary for commercial book printing customers. If you are looking for a standalone prepress support service, cost will depend on the complexity and level of support required. Submit a quick enquiry with us online and one of our local team members will be in touch to discuss your goals and requirements.

What's included in a file review?

As part of our file review, we look at resolution, colour profiles, crop marks, bleeds, margins, font embedding, page setup, and overall print readiness. You'll be informed throughout the process if we spot anything that should be fixed or amended before your project goes to print.

How do you match me with the right designer?

We ask about your project type, style preferences, budget, and timeline, then recommend designers from our network who are the best fit for your specific needs.

Do you provide design services directly?

As much as we love books, our passion is for bringing them to life in print! We focus on prepress technical work, but we also work closely with a network of trusted designers who can handle the creative side while we manage the technical printing requirements.

Can you work with files in languages other than English?

Absolutely. We handle books in many languages, though we likely won’t be able to catch any typos during file reviews.
